I've always found it quite hard to get drums to sound the way I wanted them to sound. Simply dragging and dropping loops never felt as satisfying as making something on my own. But HOW?! I kept asking myself: Why isn't there a simple trick to making drums that sound full and professional without entirely relying on loops? There is! After applying this simple technique I'm about to show you I stepped up my drum game significantly and even started receiving comments like this..

Step #1: Slice to New MIDI Track

Let's say that instead of simply "dragging and dropping" a loop, you'd want to create a variation of that loop and give it your own touch. Therefore right click your loop and select "Slice to new MIDI track".

Ableton will then give you a "regrooved" version of that loop as a MIDI track that looks something like this:

This is where the fun starts...

Step #2: Tweak the Drum Rack Knobs and replace "Slices"

Ableton has now stripped every single "transient" aka. percussion hit from that original drum loop and converted it into "slices" that are now controllable via an automatically created "drum rack". You can tweak the knobs from that drum rack or simply replace the slices with "one-shots" or other percussion sounds that you like.

Step #3: Add the MIDI effect called "Random"

There's a MIDI effect that you can add before the drum rack called "random". This will "randomize" the sequence of each slice and create a new random groove (as the name already implies). I personally set the "chance" to 100% and "choices" to around 12:

Step #4: Add the MIDI effect called "Arpeggiator" (and let the magic happen..)

From within the Arpeggiator panel you can change the "style" of the arpeggio, the "groove" and the "rate". This is where you can get really experimental and create unique sounding drum grooves:

Step #5: Get creative and record your results

From this point on you can get as crazy and creative as you'd want to and add FX and record your results into a new audio track or simply stick with the randomized groove that you've created ;).
